Cities are planning for the future and leveraging advances in communications infrastructure. The proliferation of AI and data centers is placing an increasing load on energy grids and requiring cities and utilities to change the ways they plan and operate.

Cities are leveraging widespread adoption of 5G, AI, and IoT and advances in communications technologies—including low-latency wireless networks and highly connected data centers – to develop smart city infrastructure enabling a diverse range of interconnected systems, such as smart grids, smart utility management, smart public safety and smart buildings.

The proliferation of AI and data centers, as well as more domestic manufacturing, is placing an increasing load on energy grids and requiring cities and utilities to change the ways they plan and operate such grids.

In addition, rooftop solar and other distributed generation assets are increasingly being relied upon to ensure grid reliability and resiliency.

Why does this matter?

  • Traditional urban infrastructure must keep pace with demands of technological innovation and needs of growing populations.
  • It is critical to align digital infrastructure strategies with zoning, permitting, and long-term land use to enable scalable deployment and avoid costly redesigns.
  • For the first time in almost two decades, the demand for power in the U.S. is increasing, and at a very rapid pace. Smart Cities will have a significant role to play in ensuring that power demand and supply are balanced in a cost-effective, and reliable manner.
