Judge David S. Tatel, Senior Pro Bono Counsel, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, the most prestigious honor bestowed by The American Lawyer. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1994 to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Judge Tatel filled the seat previously held by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and served nearly three decades as one of the nation’s most respected jurists. Known for his incisive questioning and eloquent opinions, he presided over landmark cases shaping environmental law, voting rights, and civil liberties. His extraordinary career—chronicled in his recent memoir Vision: A Memoir of Blindness and Justice—reflects brilliance, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice. Judge Tatel was a partner at Hogan Lovells’ predecessor firm from 1979 until his appointment to the bench, and during his time with the firm he founded and led our education practice.
