Hogan Lovells Celebrates 35 Years in Tokyo

Press releases | 01 October 2025

Tokyo, 1 October 2025 - Hogan Lovells is proud to celebrate the 35th anniversary of its Tokyo office, marking more than three decades of excellence in advising Japanese and international clients on their most complex legal and regulatory matters.

Established in 1990, the Tokyo office was among the first to be opened by an international law firm in Japan following the 1985 reforms allowing foreign lawyers to practise in the country. Our Tokyo team built strong and enduring relationships with leading Japanese corporations in the ensuing years, supporting their domestic and cross-border growth and dispute resolution, and establishing Hogan Lovells as one of the leading firms in Japan. Today, the Tokyo team brings together more than 40 foreign- and Japan-qualified lawyers and professionals, combining deep local knowledge with global reach.

Key areas of strength include Corporate/M&A, Intellectual Property, and Life Sciences. The team is ranked Band 1 and Tier 1 across multiple categories by Chambers, The Legal 500, and other leading directories, with its M&A, IP, and Life Sciences practices and long-standing practitioners recognized as market leaders.

Miguel Zaldivar, CEO of Hogan Lovells, commented: "Tokyo has long been a cornerstone of our global strategy. Japan is home to some of the world’s most innovative companies, and our Tokyo office has been a trusted partner to them for 35 years. As our clients navigate opportunities in areas such as energy transition, life sciences, and technology, we are proud of the role our Tokyo team plays in helping them succeed both locally and globally."

Dr Frederick Ch’en, Hogan Lovells Office Managing Partner in Tokyo, said: "We are proud to celebrate 35 years in Japan. Our history here reflects not only legal excellence but also cultural understanding, scientific expertise, and long-term partnerships. With one of the largest international IP teams in the country, top-ranked corporate capabilities, and a market-leading Life Sciences practice, our Tokyo office is uniquely placed to advise clients on their most critical issues. Looking ahead, we are committed to continuing to grow with our clients in Japan and to serving as a bridge between Japan and the wider global economy."
