Katie has extensive experience in the area of international data transfers, including designing global compliance programs, advising both the providers and users of cloud services, outsourcing, and guiding clients to achieve Binding Corporate Rules for both Controllers and Processors. She also regularly advises on data-driven marketing activities, personalisation, and cross-device tracking.
Katie's regulatory work includes strategy and advocacy, responding to regulator RFI's and proactive outreach in the areas of privacy and AI, and addressing complex data subject issues and risk management.
Before returning to private practice in 2011, Katie worked in-house at the BBC as a data protection and freedom of information specialist and has completed a number of client secondments. She consistently uses this first-hand, practical experience to provide real-world, commercial advice to our clients.
Katie was a contributor to 'European Privacy; Law and Practice for Data Protection Professionals' (IAPP, 2022).
Advising a ride-sharing platform on its response to an inquiry by the ICO in relation to the pricing and work allocation algorithms and related data protection impact assessments.
Advising a number of leading technology businesses on the use of facial recognition technology, for example as an identity verification tool.
Advising a number of international businesses on the use of AI recruitment tools.
Assisting multinationals to devise and implement workable strategies to legitimise international data flows, for example when centralising an HR database outside Europe
Advising an AI Chatbot service with its response to information requests from European DPAs and the ICO in relation to the use of user data in the context of AI model training.
